Ring Ring! Hello? “Hey Jarrad, It’s Tim”. “Hey man, Hows thing’s”? “Yah good, I am out mowing the field ya want to come on out and finish it off for me?” “Yeah man sure, no probs.” Okay, this lever works the bucket, this lever works the mower, and this here is the throttle, got it? No worries man, see ya in a few hours. Put! put!, put!, ahhh, this is the life eh ?, dragging the mower around the field behind the old tractor. The sun is shining overhead, the grass clippings and dust blowing out the back of the mower. Plenty of time to ponder life’s little aeromodelling mysteries. You would be amazed to see all the little broken and misplaced plane components scattered about the place. A broken prop here, a piece of balsa there etc. All having their own reasons for being there. Hmmm, bit of a gully in the distance, better lower the blades. Speaking of lowering blades, Tim Baileye has been seen doing his inverted flybys again, this time even lower than before. Without a lie, these would have to be 36 inches off the concrete strip at full noise. Man ya got a death wish for that plane? “ Nope” was the reply given, “someone reckons my flybys are only 6 foot off the ground”.” I was just setting the record straight” he says with a grin. The old trusty PC9 experienced some nasty flutter during a power dive exercise and only just pulled out with the help of some “ground effect”. Close call. Man this paddock is bigger than I thought. Better steer around to the right a little. Hmmm, right…. Paul Murnanes F4U Corsair recently stretched it’s wings for it’s maiden flight. After all the necessary ground checks were completed, no reason could be given why he should not kick the tyres and light the fires. Jon Bates offered to pilot the beastie for him and was probably a good thing in hindsight. Immediately after take off it started rolling to the right in a “ this is where I am going and there is nothing you can do about it” type attitude. Full left trim, full left aileron and some rudder was required to bring the war bird around enough to get her back on the deck safely. Full credit to Jon, a great save. Once on the ground and upon closer inspection there appeared to be a slight twist in the main wing. Not the sort of thing you want to find on your new model. What a bummer. Paul is determined to sort out this little setback and get it back in the air ASAP. Because someone has to protect our field from enemy attacks! Bang! Crikey there goes another big rock under the mower. Hmmm, big bangs. Commiserasions to Grant Andrews on the sad loss of his М scale Pawnee. Powered by a Zenoa G62 petrol engine and in the red corner weighing in at about 24 pounds this was surely a big rig. While running up the engine on this crop duster the wind generated by its monstrous prop practically blew all the other models away. Once up in the air it looked incredibly realistic doing a couple of circuits of the field. Where it came to grief was when it was doing a low and slow flyby for the cameras. Once past it climbed too steeply and tip stalled resulting in an abrupt about face and sickening downwind dive with no hope of recovery. One would think it was looking for a job underground (Kalgoorlie joke) the way it pounded the red dirt. You know it’s a big crash when the tin on the shed vibrates. Man this tractor purrs like a kitten… Hmm… purrs like a kitten… Lance Wittons Messerschmitt BF110 sure sounds good when those twin engines come on song. It can be seen winding its way around the sky looking very lifelike or powering up to incredible speeds for some aerobatic fun. Wingovers look fantastic with its twin crosses under the wings highly visible warning it’s enemies to stay away or pay the price. Yet another fine model from Lance. Whoa, not too close to the fence. Hmmm…. Fence… Peter DeGroots Auto Tango had a lucky escape after an impromptu in-flight engine failure. Dead stick was called and an emergency landing prepared for. Unfortunately being a little bit too far downwind and downfield, Pete found himself heading for the perimeter ringlock fence. Now a Kangaroo might go over and a rabbit might go under, but we all no a tango won’t go through a fence. Well not without a good push at least. Incredibly the fence acted as a kind of net and stopped the auto dead in its tracks without any major damage. Extremely lucky escape. Only eight lives to go. Cheers Jarrad Brown PS.
